The Nokia N900 is the first device to operate on the Linux-based Maemo OS, and any new OS can cause issues even if you are the most tech-savvy person in the world.
We've put together a list of all the shortcuts to help you along the way.
General shortcuts

Conversations
• Tap and hold on a text message = You get the option to call the person
• Swipe-from-left (as in browser) allows selecting and copying of message text.

General gestures
• Long press on Task Switch icon = Brings you back to desktop
• When getting a incoming call, turn over the device so the screen faces down towards the table surface = Silence an incoming call
• From the phone app drop down menu "turning control" allows you to set orientation, but also set it to launch the phone app when you turn the device to portrait. Seems to only work from the desktop.

Keyboard shortcuts
IMHO, keyboard shortcuts are needed on QWERTY keyboard devices to help justify the compromise in size of the device and the N900 has a few shortcuts that you may find useful. Did you notice in my photos that there is a real Ctrl key on the N900? Kudos to Nokia for including this since so many times we see this missing from QWERTY keyboard devices. Here are some shortcuts found in the User Guide:

General

* Ctrl + Backspace: From within an application this will take you back out to the visual task manager. (Thanks to Chanse for that one.)

These are all great Matt, but how the heck do I select text in the first place? You can use the shift key (far left) and the directional arrows on the keyboard to select text. Or you can use the stylus and double tap for a word or triple tap for all words in a document to select.

Miscellaneous tips
Circle zooming: I found that a double tap on text in the web browser zooms you into that text and reflows it for the display. However, I also found you can spin your finger clockwise on the display to zoom in or counterclockwise to zoom out through multiple zoom levels. I plan to show this in a video soon so you can understand what I am talking about here, but it is pretty slick.

Browser history swipe: You can quickly view your browser history (virtual history supported) by simply swiping your finger from the right off outside the viewable display to the left onto the display.

Smart dialing with QWERTY: The N900 supports smart dialing with the QWERTY keyboard so you can simply start entering a person’s name on the keyboard and have your Contacts filtered to that name. You then simply tap the selected contact you can interact with them how you desire (call, text, Skype, email, etc.).

Make a call from Conversations: You can tap and hold on a text message conversation to see a pop-up appear so you can initiate a call with your contact.

Use Nokia Maps without data connection: Just like Nokia Maps for S60 devices you can load up maps into memory and use Nokia Maps and your GPS without a data connection when traveling.

There is a TON more in the User Guide and I’ll bring you more as I discover it and as I discover things from testing and trials with the device itself.

1. Caps Lock

To use capital letters either press

Shift once and the letter you want

or

Shift twice to turn on Caps Lock – all future letters will be in CAPITAL

you should see a message “Caps Lock on”

to turn Caps Lock off, just press shift again
2. Secondary keys (Symbols/Numbers Row)

To access the alternative keys, e.g. on “D “we have “#” press

3. Additional Symbols Menu

Not all the symbols can be used via the tip above. e.g. [SQUARE BRACKETS]. You can access secondary symbols by pressing

Alt first and then Ctrl (maybe just start with Alt and roll your thumb to Ctrl)

You should see a grid of additional symbols
4. Highlight text

You can either use the touch screen or

Hold Shift and left/right arrow

depending on the direction of where your cursor begins.

To select a bigger block of text

Hold Shift and up/down arrow

You can then use the left/right arrow to refine selection.

If you want to highlight text in web browser that’s not in text editor

Swipe from left of the screen, an arrow cursor in a square pops up. Press it again to hold, then just drag and highlight [you can copy and paste using tips 5 and 6]
5. Copy text

After highlighting text just:

Hold Ctrl and “C” simultaneously

You may get a notification saying “Copied” across your screen
6. Paste text

After copying text :

Hold Ctrl and “V” simultaneously
7. Print Screen

This turns what you see on the N900’s screen into a picture – no third party apps necessary. Just:

Hold Ctrl and Shift and “P” simultaneously
8. Quick search for Contacts

When in desktop view, just

Start typing name of contact via keyboard

The contacts window will appear instantly
9. Instantly go back a page in the Web Browser

If you misspress a link, you might just want to go back a page instantly, and not go through the carousel of your browsing history. If so just press

Delete

And you’ll go back to the previous page.
10. Lock Phone

This technically isn’t using the keyboard but it’s a nice button shortcut alternative to the lock switch. Just press

On twice
11. Quick Multitask View

To view your multiple windows without having to press the button on screen, when you have an app running

Ctrl and Delete

You’ll instantly switch to view the live thumbnails of any open application.

This means you don’t have to exit full screen view of the web browser to switch windows.
12. Delete Lines of text without highlighting

To quickly delete whole lines of text without holding the delete button or highlighting a line of text:

Hold Ctrl and Shift and Delete [Simultaneously]

You’ll delete blocks texts one line at a time.
13. Scrolling in Web Browser

Of course, you can just swipe the screen. Alternatively you can press

Space

This scrolls down a several lines at a time.

or

Arrows

This scrolls as you hold in a particular direction

The new Nokia N8 has been unveiled by the Finnish company to be released sometime in August and has the best functionality, specifications and features to date by any Nokia phone.

Nokia have been rather quite recently in the world phone market regarding new technology and functionalities which the Iphone has had plenty of advertisement for.

However the new Nokia N8 is something different and new compared to previous phones by the company and by any manufacturer for that matter.
Considering that the last time the phone giants released anything new was four years ago with the Nokia N95, the latest new N series will boast a 12-megapixel camera, a new operating system and multi touch screen.
The new Nokia N8 has also got never before seen video functionality that even the Iphone will be jealous of. It’s makers are insisting that the video quality are that of DVD quality and also contains Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon flash which is a feet which the Iphone even failed to have.
If we look at the new 12 megapixel camera in a little more extensive manner, it is very easy to say that the phone will even surpass some digital cameras. One thing is for sure and that is the N8 will give you a phone camera experience never before seen.
The Nokia N8 also incorporates a HD quality video recording system which has astonished even mobile phone developers let alone would be buyers from around the world. We all know how much memory HD quality video’s and pictures can take up, which is why the new N8 will have a 16 GB internal memory which can be extended by 48 GB through it’s MicroSD slot.
The phone will also feature extremely high quality games which you can expect to run smoothly with the help of the new Symbian 3 operating system and will be visually impressive with it’s 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen.
The battery life is also impressive considering the amount of applications that it runs with a. It has a 720 minute (12 Hours) talk time with up to with 6 hours of video playback. It also boasts 50 hours of music playback in the offline mode.

The Nokia N8 is a never before seen technological marvel and considering the specifications, can easily surpass the Iphone. But is it coincidence that the Nokia N8 is released at the same time as the new iPhone 4G. Well in the financial market it will be very rear for such things to be by coincidence.
Though it is not the official price the Nokia N8 is said to be priced at 340 – 400 Euros (Not Official).
The Nokia N8 is said to be the new Iphone killer but I won’t go into that. The specs and special features of the phone is out there for consumers to decide but one thing is for sure and that is no matter how many new features the phone has, if it’s operating system and software do not run smoothly, it will probably be slayed itself.

Nokia today announced a new addition to its Eseries line up. The Nokia E5, which runs S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, is a mid-range device in a QWERTY slab form factor, with a 5 megapixel EDoF camera, comprehensive connectivity (tri-band 3G, WiFi), integrated GPS and 256MB of RAM, the first of the new raft of Nokia Symbian-powered phones to have this. It has a comprehensive social messaging software suite, with support for email, instant messaging and social networks. The Nokia E5, which can be considered a successor to the E63, will be available in Q3 2010 at a price of EUR 180 before taxes and subsidies. Read on for specs, photos and our thoughts.
The E5 is very similar in size to the E63 (115 x 58.9 x 12.8 mm versus 113 mm x 59 mm x 13 mm), but slightly smaller by volume (75 cc versus 86 cc) thanks to its more rounded profile. Due to the lower price and resultant materials the E5 is bigger than the E72 (114 x 58.3 x 10.1 mm and 65 cc). The keyboard's bottom row has been slightly tweaked with a return to the larger space bar with three (E5, E71), rather than four (E63, E72), buttons on either side. The control cluster has also been redesigned, as has the back of the device, with a mixture of plastic and metallic materials.
At €180 before taxes and subsidies, the E5 is Nokia's cheapest ever Eseries. It compares with launch prices of €199 for Nokia E63, €245 for the Nokia E52 and €350 for the Nokia E72. In the UK it should have a SIM-free street price of around £180, but, as with other products, this will fall in time.

Our thoughts

Combining, amazingly, (nearly) all the features of the slightly more expensive E63 and the much more expensive E72, the E5 looks set to do very well indeed. Aside from battery size, the E5 matches the other models on almost every count (5 megapixel cam, WiFi, GPS, torch mode and so on), while bringing back the E71's longer space bar (hooray!) and introducing a new social home screen, previously only seen on devices like the 5730 XpressMusic.
On the tech front, the QVGA screen remains from the E5's predecessors, but in other respects the E5 leaps ahead of its predecessors, with a very welcome extra 128MB of RAM, meaning about 160MB after booting. Also interesting is the quoted 250MB of internal storage, implying that, as on the N97 mini, Nokia are finally recognising that they need to allow plenty of room for user-found and Nokia-supplied apps and patches on the "C" (system) disk.
The use of EDoF (Extended Depth of Field) technology for the camera is interesting - this is the first 5 megapixel EDoF unit that I've seen. Photo results from the E52 and E55 (both with 3.2 megapixel EDoF) were surprisingly good and I'm cautiously optimistic about the unit in the E5.
As with other recent Nokia launches, the price is again the real star though. To bring all of the above in at around half the price of the E72 is simply stunning. The market for QWERTY candybars is burgeoning, as more and more people find themselves wanting to type decent amounts in Facebook and Twitter status messages, plus email and SMS, and the E5 will do very well here - we'd expect to see it on Pay As You Go, subsidised by various carriers for, for example, £140 or less here in the UK.
